Grael — wild greens; the hedgerow and roadside leaves gathered for eating.
Notes
Bitter, plentiful, and free. Gathered in spring, when a household has spent four months eating stored Chiaz and preserved Stoek and wants something fresh badly enough to walk a hedgerow for it. Not a hardship food; the first Grael of the year is looked forward to. Waystation households gather it as a matter of course, city households buy it from those who do, and every child in the north is taught which leaves are worth taking.
Native to Teraell, and hard in the way native plants are — the tissue lays down mineral as it grows, so the leaf is stiff and faintly glassy and a blade dulls on it.
