Long-legged and bold, the Kaeva is as apt to run something down as to stoop on it. Unlike most hunting birds it hunts on foot, walking grass and scrub with a bony spur above each foot like a Vaelith's, flying only to close the last of the distance, in loose company — pairs work a field without being taught. It attached itself to people by following the Dorath and the caravans to eat what they kicked up, and did so for so long that the step to training and feeding was a small one.

In Shining Reach it is a refined pursuit with literature and opinions on bloodlines. In Stormharbor it is an efficient way to keep meat on the table. Caravaners keep them for both reasons and for company. A Kaeva bonds deeply to its handler, and one given to a new keeper sulks for at least a season — a thing everyone finds funny except the new keeper.
