Kaeva — the hunting bird. Long-legged and bold, and as apt to run down its prey as to stoop on it.
Notes
Unusual among hunting birds in that it walks. A Kaeva quarters open ground on foot, working through grass and scrub, and takes to the air chiefly to close the last of a distance. It hunts in loose company rather than alone and pairs will work a field between them without being taught to. It attached itself to people before anyone thought to keep it. Wild Kaeva follow Dorath herds and caravan trains to take what the wheels and hooves put up, and they have done so long enough that the step to being fed and flown deliberately was a short one. Flown in every city-state. In Shining Reach it is a pursuit with its own literature and a great deal of opinion about bloodlines. In Stormharbor it is a practical way of putting meat on a table. Caravan outriders keep them for both reasons and for the company. Bonds to a handler and knows them at a distance. A Kaeva that has been passed to a new keeper sulks about it for a season and everyone finds this funny except the new keeper.
A short bony spur sits above each foot, of the kind a Vaelith carries above the hoof. A Kaeva hunts on the ground and uses them there.
