Insects

From Oathbond Wiki
Wyrma
A biting fly of wet and standing ground, small and persistent, out from the first warm days until frost. It breeds in still water, so it is common in Eldershore's Ireis fields and on northern moorland; it is why a Wallach wallows more than the heat accounts for, why nobody camps near still water if there is drier ground within a mile, and why waystations burn smoky fires in the evening.
Nochwyn
The night-singing insect of warm evenings, barely audible alone and loud in numbers, its sound made by a plated section working against itself. The sound of a warm evening in every city that has them; Eldershore's are louder and never stop for a season.
Krendh
The beetle: hard-shelled, in leaf litter and soil, in dozens of kinds nobody outside the Academy and the Registrars would name. Under stones, in wood piles, and in stored grain as a nuisance rather than a threat. Its shell is a plate, like a Twyrth's or a Roeva's laid out small.
Vespa
A stinging insect half a finger long, banded dark, plated over thorax and abdomen — easy to ignore singly and very hard to kill. Away from its nest it is no real danger. The danger is the Vespra.
Butera and Bwyddrei
The day and night forms of one kind of insect, with hard plated wing cases that fold closed over the body so that it looks like a plain shelled bug. Opened, the wings beneath are bright greens, coppers, and blues in the Butera and duller in the Bwyddrei, shown deliberately rather than worn. Bwyddrei are drawn to lights at night and clatter against the glass or die in open flame.
Spidh
The spider. Its abdomen is plated rather than soft, so it cannot simply be crushed underfoot and most do not try. In every corner of every home, hedgerow, garden, and cellar, and usually left alone to deal with the more annoying things in the air.
