Staever — the long thrusting weapon. A lance or spear, as distinct from the blades of the duel.

A working weapon rather than an honorable one, which is a distinction every city makes and none of them makes politely. A Svoerd or a Rafrwy is for another person; a Staever is for a thing that is trying to eat you, and it is carried by outriders, herders, waystation guards and anyone who has to walk ground where reach is worth more than elegance. Stormharbor’s whaling Staever is the extreme of the type: Forgegate steel, made long and thin and to specification, because one that bends at contact kills the man holding it. It is the single most expensive thing in a whaleboat and is not used for anything else.
