eimoe — a particle placed before a claim to mark it as the speaker’s own judgement rather than settled fact.
Notes
A small word of considerable philosophical weight, and the Academy is careful with it. To omit eimoe is to assert; to include it is to concede that another might reasonably hold otherwise. Its use in a published paper is read as genuine humility, and its absence in a contested matter as arrogance.
