alkoe — distilled spirit. The strong drink, as distinct from Alkra generally.
Notes
Brandy, cane spirit, grain spirit and the mountain fruit spirits of Clearhold. Sold in smaller measure and at greater price, and drunk with more ceremony or less depending entirely on the city. In Shining Reach a good alkoe is offered after a meal and admired; in Stormharbor it is drunk to keep the cold out and no one comments; in the Iron Coves it is currency. Excess in it is judged more harshly than excess in Alkra, since a person who cannot govern themselves on distilled spirit has chosen the thing that made it hardest.
