Naevla — the guard crop, planted in strips through a field. The Ryda will not cross it.
Notes
A low bitter plant of no use for anything else. It is not eaten, not fed to stock, and not sold. It is planted because fields planted that way survive and fields that are not do not, and no one has ever needed more reason than that.
Every agricultural ring in the world is laid out in strips because of it, which is the first thing a traveler notices about farmland anywhere and the last thing anyone thinks to explain.
Engineered pre-Fall alongside the Ryda, as its counter.
Mineral-hard in the leaf, as native plants are, though the Naevla is not native. Whoever made it hardened it deliberately, and the Ryda will not bite what it cannot chew.
