Linmaen — a boat man; one of the few on a whaling crew who go over the side and cross the Merka.
Notes
Three or four boats of six on a ship of thirty, so a few hundred in the whole of Stormharbor. The rest of a crew sails her, renders, coopers and keeps her afloat, and the distinction is never blurred.
A man is a Linmaen from his first boat until he stops, and stopping is his own decision and nobody else’s. A Broenn hand does not end it; a great many Linmaen are still in the boat with hands that no longer close properly.
