Haerl — the cold-water food fish of the northern seas. The staple catch, and what Stormharbor lives on.
Notes
Heavy bodied and blunt headed, two to four Paelm long, mottled olive above and pale beneath. Taken in enormous numbers on lines and nets in the cold water off the northern coast. It salts and dries better than anything else in the sea and keeps for years without spoiling, which is the whole of its value. Dried Haerl provisions every ship in the Known World, feeds Stormharbor through Endwr, and travels the Road in barrels to cities that have never seen the sea. Cheap, plain, and eaten by everyone. A northern household that has run out of Haerl has run out of everything.
