Haeldi — to hold; to grip with strength, to sustain against force, to keep from breaking or falling. Also what holds a frontier band together.
Notes
Of a rope, a line, a beam, a position. Used of hands and of things that bear weight, and figuratively of a person who does not give way.
The second sense belongs to the frontier bands, who have no Oathbond and three of whose four aspects are city machinery they cannot hold. Their Haeldi is four obligations, none of them sworn and none witnessed: share food, keep watch, do not abandon the group, raise the children together. A person who fails at them is not shamed into amendment. The band stops feeding them.
