Notes
The commonest oil in the Known World and the one most households never think about. It burns in every lamp that is not a glow globe, which is to say most lamps in most cities. It cooks, it dresses leather, it makes soap, it finishes timber, and thinned it keeps brass from going green. Graded by pressing. The first pressing is pale, near odorless, and goes to the table and the finer trades. The second is darker and heavier and goes to lamps, harness, and the yards. The last is fit only for soap and for coarse work, and is sold cheap by the Baerl. A clockmaker will not use it at any grade, holding that it gums the works; the fine oils of that trade are drawn from other sources and cost accordingly.
