Maersi — one who tells accounts of themselves in which they are impossibly capable and never at fault.
Notes
The teller rather than the tale. A Maersi is always the one who saw it first, held the line, made the shot, and was right when everyone else was wrong, and the accounts improve each time they are given.
The word began among the Skalds for a badly made hero and moved into ordinary speech, which is where it does its real work. Standing rests on what people say about a person, so a reputation for Maersi is expensive — once a person is known for it, nothing they report is weighed the same way again.
Never said to the person’s face, and generally not needed. Everyone present already knows.
