Taul — rope; cordage twisted from Tauw fiber.

Notes

Sold by the length rather than the weight, and graded by the number of strands and the tightness of the lay. Ships’ taul is the finest made and the most costly, being tested before sale; caravan taul is coarser and cheaper; a household buys whatever the chandler has. The trade of twisting it is an honorable one with its own standards, and a taul-maker who sells a length that parts under load has failed his Station Oathbond in a way everyone can see. Taul-walks are long narrow yards found in every harbor district, and the length of a city’s walk sets the longest single rope it can make.
