Mlaedi — performed courtesy; deference done at a person rather than for them, in place of having any standing.
Notes
A person who is Mlaedi is making a show of respect that is not theirs to offer, and everybody watching can see the show.
Said of anybody, of any sex, since the failure is not a gendered one; broe-Mlaedi and sei-Mlaedi where it needs marking. The precise opposite of what Diswa approves, and a quiet insult rather than a loud one.
It is said about a person and almost never to them. Saying it to somebody's face is a direct accusation of having no standing, which is a serious thing to say out loud.
