Map of the Known World of Teraell: a single wide landmass, broad in the west and east and narrowing to a neck in the middle where Forgegate sits at the meeting of two rivers. Stormharbor is in the far northwest, Shining Reach on the north shore of a large central sea, Clearhold in mountains on the southeastern coast, Eldershore far to the southeast, and the Iron Coves are an island chain in the southwestern sea. Two east-west lines cross the map: the Frostline through the middle and the Greenline across the south.
Map of Teraell

Teraell is the name of the world in the Common Reason Tongue, and the name its people use for the planet they live on. The parts of it that have been explored and settled are called the Known Lands or the Known World.

The present year is 917, in the age its people call the Age of Oath and Brass.

The Known World

The Known World is a single long coast and its hinterland, holding six city-states and the Frontier between and beyond them: Shining Reach, Forgegate, Stormharbor, Eldershore, Clearhold, and The Iron Coves. All trade, law, and history that matters to anyone alive happens here. See The Six City-States and Geography of Teraell.

Beyond it, the far north and far south of the planet are unexplored. The cold there is lethal and nothing in the world's technology can cross it. Nobody in Teraell has seen the whole of their world, and nobody expects to.

What kind of world it is

Teraell runs on clockwork and brass, sail and skaerflint. Its cities have running water, stoves, refined automata, and rifled naval cannon; they do not have large steam engines, and they never will (see Technology in Teraell). Medicine is good enough that people stay healthy and useful well into old age. The wilds are as dangerous as they have ever been, and are treated as a standing reminder of the respect nature is owed (see The Land).

Every free person in Teraell holds an Oathbond — the standing they are born into and must keep by their conduct each day. Slavery is lawful in every city, and the argument over whether it should be is the one argument the world has never finished (see The Contested Ground).

Time

Years are counted from year one, the year the survivors of the Fall began keeping records. The count predates every city, including Eldershore, the oldest. See Historical Timeline and The Calendar.

Hidden truth — not known in Teraell
Teraell is not the world its people think it is. It is the dimension of a civilization that destroyed itself, reseeded with people pulled from our own world by an AI built to prevent industrialization from ever happening again. Everyone who knew this died within the first two centuries. See The Fall and Year One and The Secret Nobody Is Keeping.
