afa — a pocket reckoner; a small hand-worked clockwork device for adding and taking away, carried on the person.
Notes
A clerk's or a merchant's tool for simple sums. Nothing like a difference engine, which is steam-driven and institutional, and nothing a physician would trust with a dose.
