Notes
Serpentine but not a snake — it has four short powerful limbs and moves on land as well as in water, though it is far quicker in the water. Twelve to twenty feet in a mature adult, heavily muscled, scaled in deep green to near black depending on where it lives. The head is broad and flattened with a flared crest behind the skull that it raises when threatened.
The strike comes out of the water in one motion. The jaws lock and the animal rolls, and it drowns what it has taken before eating it.
Black, thick as a man’s thigh at the middle, and effectively invisible in dark water. It takes at the water’s edge, drags under, and does not release. River crossings on the Guild Road are treated with caution for this reason and no other. It is the reason the Vennek exists, and the reason no household near water is without one. Engineered pre-Fall and released into enemy territory. It shows no regional variation anywhere in the Known World, which is true of nothing that evolved.
