-The gravest word a free person may say to another. A caeshmae is declared aloud before witnesses, names the offense against the Oathbond that occasions it, and cannot be withdrawn by the one who made it — only answered, or refused, by the one who receives it. Refusal is permitted and is not in itself dishonorable, but it settles nothing and the matter passes to the two houses, which is what most caeshmae are actually calculated to achieve. Acceptance keeps it between the two persons, which is the older and better-regarded course. A caeshmae given without cause is a graver failing than the offense it pretends to answer, and a person who issues them freely is understood to be advertising a weakness rather than a strength. Magistrates in Shining Reach record them; the Thing in Stormharbor hears them; in the Iron Coves the word is used and nothing follows from it but the fight. The full older form survives in Stormharbor Skald verse, and to say it out in full is understood to mean the speaker will not be talked down.
