== Who helps ==
Mark forgers, the critical links and the largest risk, since the evidence of what they did is permanently visible on someone else's neck. Physicians who treat people in transit and forget the visit happened. Innkeepers in rough districts and Roedhaven towns whose houses are known by whispered referral. Boat operators on rivers and coasts who carry passengers without manifests. Freed people, who help newcomers find housing and work and learn how a city expects them to behave, and do not examine a story closely. Frontier farmers and Roedhaven workers who leave food out, look the other way, and mention when a patrol is due.

== How it works ==
She is directed by whispered contacts to a place where she can shelter, and from there to the next link, one connection at a time, toward a city where she has no history and the freed community is large enough to take another person without noticing. There a forger closes her circle. She stays hidden for the weeks the ink takes to heal, and comes out with a completed circle and an account of having been manumitted somewhere a long way off, which the freed community never asks her to elaborate on.

== What it cannot do ==
It is slow, every connection made by trusted referral, and transit can take months. It is fragile; one exposure breaks a section that must be rebuilt from nothing. It is expensive in the thing it runs on, since every referral spends trust that took years to accumulate. And it is small: it moves individuals and cannot move groups, and most slaves who need it will never find it or know it exists.

== Apart from the argument ==
The public abolitionists and the network are kept deliberately separate. The abolitionists' whole position depends on arguing inside the system and being seen to; connect them to illegal escape and the argument goes with them. Still, some individuals stand in both places — an advocate who argues for reform in a Shining Reach salon may privately know which door a desperate person should knock on — and that person is doing two things that cannot be done in the same room, and knows it.
